We take a look at the top five companies revolutionizing automotive fleet management and telematics and try to understand what they’ve been patenting or seeking to patent based on the publicly available information of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Azuga

Azuga’s connected vehicle solutions are disrupting traditional markets for GPS Vehicle Tracking and Road Usage Charging. Azuga was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in San Jose, California. The company shook up the traditional GPS vehicle tracking market with industry-first price points, a social approach to telematics, that included easy-install hardware, lifetime warranties, and no contract terms. Also, it’s cloud-based, plug and play, next-generation GPS and Driver Behavior technology can begin tracking fleets in as little as 30 seconds for less than 70 cents per day per vehicle.

Azuga’s vehicle solutions

U.S. patent US10430745B2 titled “Method and Apparatus for Evaluating Driver Performance and Determining Driver Rewards” assigned to Azuga describes a method for evaluating driver performance. The method includes receiving driver activity in a fleet of vehicles from a telematics module installed in a vehicle, analyzing the driver activity based on predetermined performance criteria (safe driving, fuel economy, and productivity), generating a driver score, generating rankings among drivers of the fleet of vehicles and generating rewards for the best driver and providing recommendations for improving driver performance.

Keep Truckin

KeepTruckin is on a mission to modernize the trucking industry. It was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company’s leading fleet management platform is currently used by a 400,000-strong network of connected vehicles, one of the largest in North America. Some of the salient features include video-based driver safety, GPS tracking, ELD compliance, vehicle maintenance and fuel spend management.

Keep Truckin

Keep Truckin’s U.S. patent US10621873B1 titled “Systems and Methods for Generating Geofences” describes a system for generating a geofence based on extracting vehicle stoppage data from vehicle tracking data. The vehicle stoppage data is collected from fleets of vehicles to identify areas that likely correlate to an area where vehicles stop for a significant period of time. Moreover, through the use of a multi-step algorithm, a highly specific geofence is generated. As a result, the generated geofence may correspond to a particular parking lot or section of a parking lot, even if that parking lot is not near a rest area or depot.

Omnitracs (Solera Holdings)

Omnitracs offers the only complete fleet intelligence software platform. It was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Omnitracs provides software to nearly 15,000 trucking industry customers in the area of fleet management: routing, workflow, compliance, vehicle safety, etc. The Dallas-based company was initially acquired from Qualcomm by Austin-based investment firm Vista Equity Partners in 2013. It was recently acquired by Solera holdings, another Vista portfolio company.

Omnitracs (Solera Holdings)

U.S. patent application US20200265370A1 titled “Vehicle Control System Based on Detention Time” assigned to Omnitracs describes techniques for a fleet control system that allocates assets based on anticipated detention time at one or more shipping facilities. The fleet control system may receive and analyze telematics data from electronic logging devices (ELDs) attached to one or more trucks in a fleet to identify shipping facilities that routinely exceed average industry detention time. Identifying such shippers allows the fleet control system to control asset allocation based on anticipated detention time at each shipping facility. A method of controlling a vehicle associated with trucking using a network-based control computer (NCC) is also described.

Verizon Connect

Verizon Connect, part of the Verizon group, focuses on automating, optimizing, and revolutionizing the way people, vehicles, and things move through the world. It was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in Atlanta, GA. The company’s portfolio of solutions and services includes comprehensive fleet and mobile workforce management software platforms, embedded OEM hardware. Hum by Verizon, is a connected vehicle device that helps create a safer, smarter, and more connected driving experience.

Verizon Connect

US patent application US20200271463A1 titled “Route Determination Based on Fuel Stops and Waypoints That Are Part of Route Restrictions” assigned to Verizon Patent and Licensing describes a method where a user device receives a request for navigational instructions for a vehicle from another device. That request includes data that identifies stops for the vehicle. The device receives route restriction data that identifies a set of waypoints. The device selects, by analyzing the route restriction data, particular waypoints to include in the stops. The device determines an initial route through the stops that include the particular waypoints. The device obtains fuel selection data to use to identify fuel stops. The device determines a final route that includes the stops, and provides, to the other device, the final route to permit the vehicle to be navigated.

Samsara

The San Francisco-based Samsara provides a cloud operations platform for vehicle telematics, driver safety, mobile workflow & compliance, and asset tracking. The company was founded in 2015. Samsara operates in North America and Europe, serving more than 20,000 customers across various industries, including FMCG, Oil and Gas, logistics & transportation, industrial & automotive sectors.

Method and Apparatus For Tracking Assets

US patent application US20210195386A1 titled “Method and Apparatus For Tracking Assets” assigned to Samsara describes a tracking device that monitors an asset’s pressure measurements to enter an active mode of operation. The tracking device transmits sensor measurements of the asset to the fleet management server and determines new pressure measurements of the asset based on a threshold.
