World’s First Lab-grown Steak
Israel-based startup Aleph Farms unveiled the world’s first lab-grown steak made from cells cultured for about three weeks in a laboratory. The steak was grown without antibiotics and causes no harm to animals or the environment. To read more, click here
Dutch Startup Meatable Receives $10 million in Funding
While swine flu epidemic ruined one quarter of this year’s pork supply, Meatable aims to develop cruelty-free technologies for producing cultured meat. The startup has raised $10 million in finance, using which, it wants to sample tissue from the animal, revert the tissue to a pluripotent stem cell, and culture the sampled cell into muscle and fat to produce the pork products. Plant-based Burgers are Eligible to be Labeled “Burgers”, Says Federal Court
Federal Court blocked a law passed in Arkansas earlier in 2019, which prohibited the usage of terms such as “burgers” and “sausages” to plant-based products. The verdict brought some relief to plant-based meat alternative producers. To read more, click here
Oat-based Vegan Meat Added to Taco Bell’s Menu
Taco Bell becomes the latest fast food chain to add a new plant-based meat with its “oatrageous” taco made from oats instead of beef. The taco was tested in Finland, and has just been added to the menu in Spain. To read more, click here
UN Climate Award for Plant-based Meat Startup
Impossible Foods wins 2019 United Nations Global Climate Action Award for its work to boost awareness of food’s environmental impact. The brand claims to use 96 percent less land, 87 percent less water, and 89 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions for its meatless burger compared to a standard beef burger. To read more, click here
